A Poem About Her Hair

she is dark,

misunderstood

and judged

she is short,

strong,

she has twisted thoughts

i know

it’s taken a lot

to show who she is

she carries

her fear

like a knife

hid within

her heart is gold

protected at night though she nay sleeps

til dusk for she knows

eyes are drawn to her power

so she keeps it under wraps

and grows it fast

she oils her scalp

like her ancestors did

wearing tradition with her plaits
